Clean As A Whistle – A Sensible Guide To Hiring A Housemaid

Consider this scenario.

You wake up in a panic, and realize that you’ve almost no time to get ready. You hurriedly pull clothes out of your closet in a desperate search for the right outfit, throwing the rejects onto the floor.

As you scramble out the door, you pass by the growing pile of dishes you swore you’d get to last week. The next part of your day is just work, work, and more work; by the time you head home, you’re way too tired to clean up.

Does this sound all too familiar?

Now picture this.

You come home from another exhausting day of work to find your freshly laundered and ironed clothes in a neatly folded pile on your bed. The dishes are done, and there isn’t a speck of dust on the floor.

Magic? Nope, just the advantages of having a maid.

Hiring domestic help can make your life a whole lot easier. However, there are a few things you should keep in mind when you search for a maid who’s made for you.

First Things First – Do You Really Need A Maid?

Before you hire a maid, it’s important that you think about what you really need in terms of household help.

Are you just being lazy, or do you genuinely not have the time to clean? If your professional and / or personal life is keeping you unbelievably busy, a maid can lend a hand when you need it the most.

The Basic Background Check

Yes, it’s important to do a background check on your maid before you hire her. There are more than enough horror stories of  domestic help gone wild.

Before you settle on a maid, make sure you know a bit about her background. Things like her hometown, the languages she speaks, and her previous experience are all factors you should keep in mind.

Your Maid Is Not Your Therapist (Or Your Mom)

Careful about this one.

If you’ve had a maid for longer than a year, the lines of boss / friend can become blurred, especially if you’re usually at home when she’s around. Like we said, it’s important – and completely appropriate – to know the basic information about each other’s lives, for safety reasons.

Anything beyond that, however, can ruin your relationship and cause your maid’s work to suffer. Set some boundaries, and stick to them.

Your Maid Is Not You

Before you get a maid, it’s important to realize that everyone has their own way of doing things. You need to step back and let your maid clean the house the way she cleans it, not the way you clean it.

This means that, although it’s easy to be controlling (think Monica from Friends), if your maid wants to use salt to clean the sink, let her. If she wants to clean the bathrooms before she does the dishes whereas you usually do the dishes before you clean the bathrooms, it’s okay.

So long as the bathrooms and dishes are clean after she’s done, who cares about the order?

Getting the help of a maid service can turn out to be the best domestic decision you take. Whether temporary or full-time, hiring a maid sure makes things a little easier at home!
