A First in India: A Confucius Classroom to be Started in Kolkata

The demand to learn the Chinese language and culture has slowly been increasing all over the world. Keeping this in mind, a Confucius classroom is set to come up next year in Kolkata. This is going to be the first of its kind in India.

What Led to the Decision?

Principal of the School of Chinese Language, Charisma Saraff, said that it’s not just businesspersons who are interested in learning the Chinese language but even young students want to learn the language and about the culture. Saraff said that, without knowledge of the culture, understanding the language is not of much help, and this is the reason for a classroom to have been set up.

The Chinese Government has approved this plan and the first Confucius classroom in our country will be set up. They have planned to bring in ten to fifteen teachers from China to make up the faculty of this new classroom.

Plans for Classes

The classes will start from the middle of 2017; the class will admit around 800 students by the end of next year.

Saraff said that Confucius is a way of life. Many of the people in China cultivate the culture of following a way of life, rather than following a religion. The classes in Kolkata have been planned in an effort to promote this kind of thinking. Instead of teaching just the language, the students will also be taught the culture, geography, literature and other significant aspects of the Chinese life.
