16 Greenfield Expressways To Be Built By Indian Government For Connectivity Improvements

Highways minister Nitin Gadkari has recently announced the Government’s intention to develop 16 greenfield projects in a bid to improve overall connectivity.

The government is on a mission to build 16 greenfield expressways which will run through comparatively backward areas of India for boosting connectivity and smooth passage of economic benefits. Commercial vehicle makers have already hailed this move of the government. The Jaipur-Ajmer-Ahmedabad, Vadodara-Mumbai and Bangalore-Amravati-Hyderabad routes will be part of these projects. Seven expressways were announced during the tenure of the UPA-1 in 2005 and the NDA regime has added nine projects as it looks to boost the highways segment and overall growth.

The government may require numerous years for completing these expressways owing to land acquisition factors and the locking in of huge funds for building the same. State governments will also have to come on board for speeding up the process. State Governments have already proposed some of these stretches and they are interested in working out all land related modalities for these corridors. Andhra Pradesh wants to link Hyderabad and Amravati while there is a proposal for similar linkage between Kolkata and Guwahati.

The government has commenced construction of the Eastern Peripheral Expressway covering 135 kilometers around Delhi and the Meerut-Delhi Expressway project would also take off shortly. Land acquisition issues have been worked out for the 379 kilometer long Mumbai-Vadodara Expressway and the tender for the same will be issued by March, 2016. These expressways would majorly cater to heavy vehicles and commercial traffic.

A feasibility study is being undertaken for all these projects and there would be a new system in place for better implementation of such mega initiatives. The government is also working on new models for land acquisition including returning certain portions of developed land to impacted families and even land pooling. Cheap Japanese loans and other financing mechanisms are also being studied. A portion of funds can also be raised through development charges to be garnered by the state government with increase in land value.
