After starting a WhatsApp number for reporting of all traffic violations, the Delhi police have now started a novel scheme where citizens reporting these offences would be given rewards for the same. Some of the prizes include a foreign trip, a car and a motorbike among others. This feature has now been integrated into the Android Application of the Delhi Traffic Police. According to the Police Commissioner, BS Bassi, this programme named Traffic Sentinel will definitely give citizens an opportunity to imbibe traffic discipline on the roads of the Capital.

Users are required to click videos or photographs through the App, enter in all basic information such as the location of the offence, time and date and press the send button. For smartphones with active GPS, the time, date and location will be automatically integrated into the photographs that are taken. Becoming a traffic sentinel would require users to download the traffic police App and enroll him/her in the same. An acknowledgement would be given to the user along with a different transaction number for every video or photograph that he/she uploads.

In case the vehicle number and offence is clearly understandable through the video or photograph, the same would be validated at the headquarters of the traffic police. Reward points would be allocated to the sentinel in question and this would be intimated through an email. Once a user reaches the minimum reward point count, he/she would be eligible for a prize. There will also be bumper prizes announced from time to time and this would be through lucky draws. A person can report a maximum of 11 traffic violations in a week. There are varying points for violations.

There are five points for driving against traffic flow, two points for triple riding, two for yellow line violations and one for parking on footpaths. One point each is allocated for driving without a seat belt, defective number plates, driving without a helmet and violating the stop line. When reward points range between 25 and 100, traffic sentinels will receive movie tickets, dinner coupons and free mobile talk time. People garnering more than 200 reward points will be eligible for winning a motorcycle, car or even foreign trips through lucky draws.
