Volkswagen Group may have to pay up a whopping INR 32 crore for integrating emission cheating software or defeat devices into its Indian cars.

Volkswagen is already facing the bitter aftermath of the emissions controversy and may have to face further penalties in India as well. According to a senior government official, if it is determined that the cars of the company in India were fitted and sold with faulty or substandard devices, under the 182 A section of the Motor Vehicles Act, there could be a penalty of INR 1000 per vehicle. There has to be a penalty in cases like these according to him.

The company has been tackling the emissions scandal globally and has already announced a recall of 3.24 lakh diesel vehicles from the Volkswagen, Audi and Skoda brands in India yesterday. Sales of some of its diesel vehicles will also be stopped till all regulatory norms are complied with. ARAI, the premier automobile testing agency found diesel cars possessing the EA189 engine to be fitted with these defeat devices. These devices are likely to cause excessive nitrogen oxide emissions on road.

The recall of these vehicles was announced after a meeting between ministry officials and company executives on Tuesday. Volkswagen has been allotted eight months for completion of this entire recall exercise. The cars recalled were mainly sold between 2008 and November 2015. According to heavy industries minister, Anant Geete, ARAI discovered that emission norms in India were violated by Volkswagen by 8-9 times of the current guidelines.

The government will subsequently commence testing of all passenger diesel vehicles in the country to determine any such violations of emission norms. This procedure will be concluded within six months.
